How to Recover Abandoned Carts on WhatsApp

Wovara Team · · 6 min read

An abandoned cart message on WhatsApp gets read far more reliably than the equivalent email — but getting it right means understanding a couple of WhatsApp-specific constraints a generic "cart recovery" guide won't mention.

Why this needs a message template, not a normal chat message

Unless the shopper has messaged your business first, you can't just message them about a cart they left behind — WhatsApp only allows free-form messaging within 24 hours of the customer's own last message. A cart recovery message going out proactively needs to be an approved message template, and because it's promotional in nature (it's nudging a purchase, not simply confirming one), Meta will typically categorise it under the marketing category, which means it goes through content review before it can be used and counts against your marketing conversation volume.

What actually gets a reply

  • A product image, not just text — recognising what they left in cart makes the message feel specific rather than generic.
  • The price, especially if anything in the cart is time-limited or low in stock.
  • A direct link back to checkout, ideally with the cart already restored rather than making them re-add items.
  • One clear message, not a drip of three. A single well-timed nudge outperforms a sequence that starts to feel like nagging.

Timing

Sending too early can catch someone who was just distracted and was always coming back; sending too late means the intent has cooled. A window of one to three hours after abandonment is a reasonable starting point for most stores — early enough that context is still fresh, late enough to filter out people who complete the purchase on their own within minutes.

Only message people who've actually opted in

This applies as much to cart recovery as to any other marketing template: the contact needs to have consented to WhatsApp marketing messages, typically captured at checkout or during account creation. A cart recovery flow built on a purchased or scraped number list isn't just against WhatsApp's policy — it also tends to convert badly, since there's no established relationship for the message to build on.

Measuring whether it's working

Track it as its own campaign rather than folding it into general marketing sends — delivery, read and click-through on the recovery link tell you whether the message itself is the problem, or whether the underlying friction is somewhere else in checkout.
